The Power Of Transformation

P86

'You can't be at the pole and at the equator at the same time - you must choose your line, as I hope to do - and it will probably be colour.' Vincent Van Gogh

When I was a very little girl, I lived with my parents in a tiny, timber workers cottage in inner city Sydney - an industrial part of town mostly made up of factories and warehouses with a few little cottages dotted around the place filled with immigrant workers and their families who came to Australia with the hope of finding a better life.

It was a very humble, kind of run down first abode - comprising two bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom with the loo outside in the garden - but it was all that my parents could afford at the time and they were happy to have a roof over their head and a place to call their own. My mother, with little means but always the avid decorator, set about putting her own stamp on the interior. She chose a warm palette of caramels, rustic reds and oranges for the lounge room and kitchen and pinks for the bathroom. It was a blue and green striped, woolly bedspread that would set the palette for my bedroom.

My room was simply furnished - with a single bed, chair and dresser - but that didn't stop my mother infusing a sense of excitement into the space with colour and texture. I remember well watching her transform the old, inexpensive pine dresser and chair from dull to electrifying with a tin of cobalt blue paint and a paintbrush. Glossy blue paint was all that she used to turn my simple room into an exciting space, full of colour and energy. A space that made me feel alive and filled me with a sense of pride and excitement about who I was, where I lived and my place in the world.

Watching my mother be creative in this way taught me a valuable lesson about the power of transformation. That with a little thought, time and love - you can turn a room (or your life) into something more than it was before. It doesn't matter who you are, where you live or how much money you have - we all have it in us to make things better.

That's my hope for this year ahead - that we find it within ourselves to transform what was into something that better reflects who we are and how we want to live. All that it takes is time, thought and love - and maybe a tin of glossy blue paint - but the results will be electrifying. That much I'm sure of....

This post is from way back - when my blog was in it's infancy... I was prompted by a reader to go back over my blog - she'd just discovered the blog and decided to read it from from the beginning! This post is a favourite - as is the pic - one of my favourites taken by Prue Ruscoe for sense of style: colour - my very first book! I hope you enjoy it....x

Hideaway Houses

2 sweden5 sweden6 sweden7 swedenfinals

I'm in love with summer houses, winter houses, spring houses - well, houses of any kind really - but particularly the ones that act as a kind of retreat... To be a retreat, this kind of house is the kind that you don't live in all year round... They are a getaway, a hideaway - a place to get lost in - a place to dream.... As you all know, I have a country house - but as I live in it all the time, it doesn't really constitute as a retreat... Simply the amount of work there is to be done around the place, day in and day out means that life up on the farm isn't exactly a getaway! Although, it is incredibly beautiful to live in... These pics of a summer house in Sweden are from Design Sponge - and are such gorgeous hideway pics... The spaces are so simple, but cozy and warm, and sweetly decorated... No fuss - just how a getaway should be....

Creativity One Day At A Time

collect

Learning how to decorate - and learning creativity of all kinds, whether writing, cooking, painting - is all about developing a daily discipline... When you create on a daily basis, in a conscious, in the moment way, then you build confidence not only in the creating of the work but you become more confident to set the work free... The key to creating is simply beginning... And today, begin by collecting... Collect the things that you love and pop them into a shoebox... Don't analyze your collections - just add as you please, ensuring that what you add makes your heart flutter... Keep up your collecting for a month before you take a peek inside... Just close the box, leave your things to simmer away - and take a deep breath everytime you add... That's all you have to do right now.... And enjoy the process of course!

As A Child Of The 70s

As a child of the 70s - and with a mother who was very much connected to her inner hippy - I grew up with Max Ehrmann's poem Desiderata pinned to the fridge. I remember it resonating with me even from an early age and often I would find myself lost in it's words whilst standing at the fridge door in search of food after a day at school... The word Desiderata means 'desired things' in Latin, and the poem was written in 1927 by the American writer - who was largely unknown in his lifetime... But even with the passing of time - the words run deep... The song version, Desiderata by Les Crane was released in 1971 - a firm favourite on 2CH - mum's preferred radio station even to this day... I was so sweetly reminded of a post (thank you mewedesign.blogspot.com) that I had made early on in the life of my blog, reciting the words from Desiderata... And so, I felt inspired to share them with you again. This time, the musical version...  So get ready for a ride back in time and into your heart - as we head back to the 70s for a piece of Desiderata... What could be more perfect than at this time of the Venus Crossing.... Enjoy!

It's All In The Edit

In the world of styling, decorating and making pictures, editing is the key. It's not so much what we pop in to the mix, but often what we've left out that's the key to a tight and cohesive design or scheme. In this spirit, I was very excited to find, when trawling through the Domayne website for another job I have coming up, these out takes from our last Domayne shoot - the one we photographed at the beautiful Coorabella house in the Byron Bay Hinterland... We did have such a busy two days - and we shot so many different schemes. But alas, only a select few can make it into the catalgoue... god bless the internet though as now the out takes have a home to call their own... Check out these beautiful pics... Such warm and fuzzy gorgeousness and so many beautiful things to choose from... I hope you enjoy this further glimpse into our shoot all...
